Hemp CBD Oil for Anxiety

Why it works and how to make it last

Everyone experiences anxiety. Your heart rate rises, your worries and fears are out of control, you feel stressed and restless — but you may have trouble kicking the feeling. The more you try to think your way out of it, the more anxious you feel.

For those with anxiety disorders, these feelings can interfere with daily living. There are a wide variety of disorders with symptoms of excessive anxiety, and around one third of adults in the United States experience an anxiety disorder, making it the most common mental illness.

However, nature may have a solution.

The hemp plant, also known as Cannabis, contains over 100 active compounds called cannabinoids, with one specifically that has gained a reputation for its power to combat anxiety. This special cannabinoid is known as cannabidiol (CBD). Hemp oil contains CBD that can be taken as a supplement and may reduce anxiety with fewer side effects than traditional anxiety medications.

The most common anti-anxiety medications include Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), Benzodiazepines and Tricyclic Antidepressants, which all may cause a long list of side effects:

  • Dizziness and lightheadedness
  • Incoordination and weakness
  • Headaches and vertigo
  • Dry mouth
  • Fatigue
  • Blurry vision, sometimes with eye muscle spasms
  • GI upset — Nausea, diarrhea or constipation
  • Slurred speech
  • Swelling (fluid retention)
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Weight change
  • Tremors
  • Long-term damage to the heart, lungs, and kidneys

With hemp CBD rich oil, there are only a few potential minor side effects. Additionally, many studies have shown that CBD notably decreases anxiety, making it a potential alternative to antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications.

How Hemp CBD Oil Can Help

The nervous system of the human body is a complex system of nerves and includes the brain. Throughout the nervous system, there are receptors that bind to cannabinoids, making up the endocannabinoid system which plays a role in regulating things like appetite, pain and mood.

When you take hemp CBD oil, the CBD binds to cannabinoid receptors and may help regulate mood. Research suggests CBD may regulate neurotransmitters in the brain — the chemical messengers that can cause anxiety.

For example, serotonin is a neurotransmitter that has the power to calm the mind. Traditional SSRIs and antidepressants boost serotonin in the brain, but can also cause the brain to stop producing it, which makes the timeframe for controlling anxiety more lengthy. However, CBD may boost serotonin without stopping the brain’s production of serotonin, allowing faster alleviation of symptoms. CBD may have beneficial anti-anxiety effects on other neurotransmitters as well, such as dopamine, GABA and glutamate.

It may also reduce stress and anxiety at the source. The hypothalamus, a part of the brain that helps control hormone production, can cause anxiety by signaling the release of hormones CRH and orexin. CBD may reduce hypothalamus activity, in turn lowering levels of anxiety-producing hormones.

Multiple studies have shown anti-anxiety effects of CBD:

  • A study that included 24 participants with social anxiety disorder and 12 without. Those taking CBD reported decreased stress and anxiety during the test, while those receiving a placebo treatment reported extreme stress and anxiety.
  • Another study on ten patients with generalized anxiety disorder found that CBD might be a successful alternative treatment because it significantly decreased activity in the brain responsible for fear and anxiety.
  • A study conducted on rats found that CBD can lower heart rates when under stress, helping to reduce anxiety.

How to Use Hemp CBD Oil

Most studies have shown positive results when CBD oil is taken sublingually, meaning under the tongue. Taking CBD orally is the best and longest-lasting way to achieve its potential anti-anxiety CBD oil benefits.
